Butterflies

It has been a beautiful day today. Not sure how warm it is, but somewhere near 60 was predicted. One of our balmy days this month.

As I was looking out the windows, I saw the butterflies happily floating in the afternoon sun. The other day a friend sent some nature photos that contained a photo of a group of blue butterflies hanging out on a tree. They were absolutely beautiful!!! The two little metal butterflies are a far cry from those in the photo, but they do bring a smile to my face every time I see them out in the flower garden, even among the neutral colors of winter. There is so much beauty in our world, sad that people don't pay more attention to it.

  1. Hi, Susan,
I've been wanting to post to you for a while, but it seems that sometimes something has to slow me down to get the important things in life done. Illness hit me several days ago, a good thing, in a way, because I recuperated with a dog and 2 cats on the pull-out sofa bed, and my computer. You daughter is wonderful, but you already know that, and that she is responsible for our involvement in the 365 project. You and she take amazing photos; mine are an embarrassment, so please don't visit me just yet. I have a long way to go.

Your interests and mine are similar. Although I do not quilt, I knit and have woven, and I have 3 llamas. At some point, perhaps when I have a larger herd, I would like to take some of the fiber from my white llamas and dye them naturally. When the time comes, I would love to talk to you about the process. Someone gifted me with enough reading material, 2 wheels and a carder, but before that venture begins, I would love to speak with you. Maybe this summer.

Thank you for having a wonderful daughter and for being you, for taking wonderful images that stand alone beautifully, without the need for text. (And I wish you could send us 10 of your 60 warm degrees; the farm is a sheet of very crusted ice).

  2. Hello RJ,
I would love to visit with you about dyeing, but I know little about natrual dyeing or dyeing wool using that method. I dye cotton or silk fabric with MX fiber reactive dyes which can be used on wool, but I think the results of dyeing it naturally would be more rewarding.
I did some research on natural dyeing many years ago, but didn't pursue it. I was even going to raise some of the plants. I think that project was probably de-railed with keeping up with 3 daughters and a farm.
My aunt is an avid knitter, but I just can't keep with it long enough to accomplish much. Whatever I can do to help, just let me know.
AND I find it exciting that you have 3 llamas from which to gather wool. The closest I can come to that on this farm is having 2 dogs that could watch over the llamas and keep the coyotes at bay.
One thing you might find helpful is looking for a group on Yahoo devoted to wool dyeing. I will ask the dyeing group I belong to and see if they know of a good group devoted to dyeing wool.
I am happy that my daughter did challenge us with this photo challenge as it has introduced the two of us to one another. I love the internet!!!!
Thank you for the nice compliments on the photos and particularly my daughter. Taking a photo each day has provided me with a different view of my world. I would say your photos can also stand alone without text. The photo of your electirc heater spoke volumes!!
I wish I could send some of the warmth eastward. Those of you in the Midwest and Eastern part of the country have experienced a brutal winter and now you have a very muddy spring to look forward to and hopefully it will come sooner rather than later.
Hope you are feeling better. Sometimes it takes a bug to slow us down and force us smell the roses, if we could smell.
